Malic Acid
Also known as hydroxybutanedioic acid, malic acid is considered an alpha hydroxy acid. Green apples contain malic acid, which contributes to the sourness of a green apple. Sometimes used in personal care products as a chemical exfoliant. Its high acidity can be irritating to the skin.

Also known as glycosaminoglycans, these compounds are natural carbohydrate-based polymers that are essential elements of connective tissue and the skin’s extracellular complex. They are responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of the skin as well as maintaining high levels of moisture within the skin. Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) and chondroitan sulfate are examples of mucopolysaccharides.
